The food drawer system has the purpose of catching the food that is released from the feeder and allowing the chickens to eat from it. It is designed to open for 15 minutes, twice a day to catch the food and let the chickens eat, and then close for the remainder of the day to keep rats out of the food. The lid moves back and forth along dovetails via rack and pinion, with a motor mounted to the rear of the drawer in order to power it.

Testing
In order to test the feeding system, several starting voltages were used to ensure the lid opened and closed reliably. This allowed us to to land on one that was suitable for opening and closing the lid without getting stuck, but also at a slow enough speed that it would not injure any chickens.
